Round-table Llorenç Barber 70 years

Llorenç Barber

The Ensems Festival commemorates the 70th anniversary of the sound artist Llorenç Barber and does so by reviewing his artistic and creative career. Participants: Llorenç Barber, Rubén López Cano, Marina Hervás, Montserrat Palacios and Pep Llopis (moderator)
Llorenç Barber was born in Ayelo de Malferit (Valencia) into a family that had fled in 1945 from the Second World War from his residence in Versailles in France. He was born on August 6, 1948.

When he was 10 years old he entered the metropolitan seminary (1958-1968) where he studied organ, bells, Gregorian, Bach and all the news about the avant-garde that arrived in Valencia. Curiously, one of the people who remembers that time as the most influential is Father Alfons Roig, closer to the plastic arts than to music. In 1970, he came into contact with John Cage through the reading of Silence in the same year he first contacted the Zaj group. Despite being invited to study piano with Fernando Puchol in Madrid in 1971 with the aim of becoming a virtuoso of the piano, he declined this invitation to follow Ramón Barce and start a career as a creator for free.

After some concerts in Lisbon and Valencia, and starting as a lecturer in the university of this last city, he arrived at the University of Madrid in 1972 as a Philosophy and Literature student (in fact he did a work on Zaj for these studies as a thesis or degree memory). That same year he received another of his great influences when he contacted Ramón Barce.

As of this year, he began to found several of the musical groups that would become some of the most important ones in Spain: in 1973 Llorenç began to work on the idea of creating a group that produced action music in Valencia, and with that spirit on January 10, 1974 takes place the founding concert of «Actum» by Barber himself, in the society El Micalet. With this group (and outside of it) he would spend several years giving concerts, generally minimalist.

In 1976 he went to Darmstadt for the last time where he came into contact with composers such as John Cage, Mauricio Kagel or Ligeti and his quality as composer made him the following year at the Fundación Juan March grant him the creation scholarship, and another the Ministry of Culture in 1978. In that year he founded the Mundana Music Workshop, from which proposals such as the Opera de papel came out.

He was appointed director of the "Music Classroom" of the Complutense University of Madrid in 1979, from which he organized and directed some thirty «Courses of musical creation», hundreds of concerts and four «Festivals of Free Sound Expression», throughout of five years in which he became one of the gurus and ideologues of the youngest composers of the country, he also appears in his hand the "eco instrumental group" the following year since the one that was working, and in a more specialized way, a series of musics of marked minimalist character. Also in 1979 he created and directed the ENSEMS, in Valencia, a series of long-distance alternative music acts. He also participated in the Flatus vocis trio together with Fátima Miranda and Bartolomé Ferrando from 1987, the same year in which he began to participate as a collaborator in the program "El mirador" by RTVE, until 1990.

As director of «Paralelo Madrid-other musics» since 1992, he joined the «Contemporary Scene Festival» until today, as well as the famous «Nits d'Aielo», an annual festival also dedicated to experimental art. In 2008, the prestigious Cura Castillejo Prize was created, which annually recognizes the work of the most outstanding creators and theoreticians of sound art and experimental music in Spain.

Since 2006 he lives in La Cañada, Valencia. His last work was commissioned for the inaugural concert of the auditorium of the Labor University, in Gijón, which took place on October 19, 2007.

He is currently preparing the publication of a new book and is preparing his biography together with an analysis of all his work in the doctoral program "Music in Contemporary Spain" of the University of Oviedo.

In May 2010, he gave a Workshop at the University of Chile, within the seminar organized by the Faculty of Arts of the same house of studies.

For October of the same year, an intervention with bells and cannons was contemplated in the port of Valparaíso with the work Concierto de ciudad, which was also performed in 2013.
