"Vibrating worlds and sound creatures"
ENSEMS musical creation workshops for children ages 8-13
14th, 16th, 21st and 23rd of July, from 10.30h to 11.30h

As part of the pedagogical project at the ENSEMS 2020 Festival, we opened 4 online workshops for children in July 2020 related to sound creation. The purpose of these workshops is to expose children to a variety of approaches to music and sound creation, using maps, everyday situations, stories and sound tours. In these workshops, we turn our houses into sound laboratories to take inspiration from the world of sounds that operate as soundtracks for our everyday lives.

Recommended ages: 8 to 13 years

1st WORKSHOP: the house as a soundtrack
Tuesday, July 14th / 10.30h to 11.30h

Everyday objects provide an entry point into a world of sounds, and encourage us to rethink how we use our ears; apart from listening to our parents or math teachers. This workshop will allow us to delve into resources and tools to create a map of our own houses, starting with the idea of a ”sound tour.”

2nd WORKSHOP. Sound actions: cans, vegetables and motorized cups
Thursday, July 16 / 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

During the many days spent at home you surely heard your neighbors hanging a picture on the wall or loudly watching the TV. You might have missed, however, the distant shouts of your school friends in the neighborhood park. Spending so much time in the same place allows us to take notice of these everyday sounds that we might have ignored before. Have you ever really listened to the sound of a carrot being chopped, or thought about how you could turn this sound into music? In this workshop we explore the sounds of our everyday lives and incorporate them into our own compositions.

3rd and 4th WORKSHOP: Unmuting fairy tales (I and II)
Tuesday, July 21 and Thursday, July 23 / 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Have you ever read a story and imagined the voices of the characters? Do you want to create a story soundtrack? In these workshops you will learn to find sounds in your everyday environment to tell stories in a new way, as well as how to compose your own original sound story. We will base our sound stories on dark and fantastical pieces such as "The Little Macabre" by Edward Gorey, "The Melancholy Death of the Oyster Boy" by Tim Burton or the comics of Max and Moritz.

WORKSHOP I
ILLUSTRATED STOP MOTION: basic 2D animation resources to tell stories
July 22, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Diego Ingold (@diego_ingold)

A piece of paper and a pencil: that's where it all begins, it's true, but who hasn't wanted to bring stories and their characters off the page and into the real world? In this workshop, we will learn basic artistic and technical resources to tell stories with stop motion techniques and the use of everyday objects.

WORKSHOP II
THE SOUND YOU ARE: sound, body and objects in artistic experimentation
July 23, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Úrsula S. Cristóbal (https://ursulasancristobal.wordpress.com)

Listening not only allows us to explore our environments, but also the subjectivity of our body as an integral part of a sociocultural sphere. Sounds, music and objects allow us to tackle problems where the individual and the collective interrelate: violence, discrimination and loss, among others. Based on the work of various contemporary artists, this seminar tries to contribute practical strategies that allow sound, body and objects to be related to the expression of subjectivity.

WORKSHOP III
SOUND TALES: approach to sound art from an interdisciplinary perspective
July 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Hara Alonso (haraalonso.com)

In this workshop, participants will acquire tools for literary creation from a sound perspective. We will build creativity and improvisation skills through various games and creative group exercises involving micro stories, haikus and graphic scores.

WORKSHOP IV
HOME ELECTRONIC SOUND LABORATORY: tools for exploring sound as vibration
July 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Jesús Jara (http://oficioselectrosonoros.org/equipo/)

From the ripples produced by dropping a stone in the water to vibrations produced by the cone of a speaker, to the oscillation of any kind of particles at a certain speed, all of these vibrations are perceived by our ears as sounds. In this workshop we will learn strategies to help us visualize the relationship between sound and vibration through electricity. These tools will lay the foundations for our small electronic sound laboratory.
